Three profiles, not one number
The study grouped adolescents by psychiatric symptoms, emotion-recognition ability, and problematic digital use, and found three clusters:
- Older girls, moderate risk — some psychiatric symptoms present, but "relatively balanced patterns of digital engagement." Symptoms alone didn't predict overuse.
- Predominantly female, high internalizing symptoms — the largest group. Elevated anxiety and depression, strong emotion-recognition skills, lower parental education, and the highest levels of problematic social media, smartphone, and internet use of the three groups.
- Younger boys, externalizing features — higher ADHD prevalence, weaker emotion-recognition skills, and gaming occupying a more prominent place in their digital activity than social media or smartphone use.
Why this matters for DarkBadge
DarkBadge scores design mechanisms, not hours logged — and this study is a direct data point for why that distinction matters. The highest-risk group here wasn't the one spending the most raw time online; it was the group whose psychiatric profile (anxiety, depression) intersected with products built around open-ended self-regulation failure. The gaming-heavy group's risk ran through a different mechanism entirely — ADHD and weaker emotion recognition pairing with gaming's faster reward loops, not social media's status anxiety.
The researchers' own framing: two adolescents can spend similar amounts of time online "while using technology for very different reasons." A single screen-time number can't tell you which adolescent is at risk, or why — but naming the mechanism, the way DarkBadge's dimensions try to, can.
